A class action was filed against Google on Tuesday, accusing the tech giant of invading the privacy of millions of users without their knowledge by tracking internet use even when using private browsing mode.   The class action accuses Google of tracking and collecting consumer browsing history and other web activity data even when using private browsing mode.  The complaint, filed to the District Court of Northern California, claims Google tracks users’ browsing data and other identifying information through Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager, and various other application and website plug-ins, such as Google applications on mobile devices and the Google Sign-In button for websites regardless of what mode of browsing is chosen. …

Google keeps a staggering amount of information about you. Here’s how to manage it

Google collects a staggering amount of information about you — maybe even more than you realize. Google remembers every search you perform and every YouTube video you watch. Whether you have an iPhone ($699 at Amazon) or Android phone, Google Maps logs everywhere you go, the route you take to get there, when you arrive and what time you leave — even if you never open the app. When you really take a look at everything Google knows about you, the results can be shocking — maybe even a little frightening. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do about it. …

Over the past few months, many users have complained about xHelper’s near “unremovable” state… While the trojan is currently engaging in spam and ad revenue, it also possesses other, more dangerous features. xHelper can download and install other apps, a function that the xHelper could at any point to deploy second-stage malware payloads, such as ransomware, banking trojans, DDoS bots, or password stealers.

Regulation is Coming to YouTube, and It’s Going to be Ugly

YouTube, which has battled repeated negative headlines in the last two years, published new terms of service for its users in the European Union and Switzerland last month. Hardly anyone noticed.  The rules beef up the power of the video sharing platform to remove access to users who cause harm to the reputation of the service, or harm its users. … Today, the new rules came into force across 29 countries — and at a stroke YouTube became fractured.  Users who access the platform from different corners of the world — the site has around 100 localized versions worldwide, covering 95% of the internet’s users, except China, where the ruling Communist party’s censorship was seen as too difficult to comply with — all see different versions of the site already.

How to use Google’s Password Alert tool to thwart phishing attacks

Google’s built a new tool in the fight against phishing. The free Password Alert Chrome extension keeps track of where you enter your Google account password and alerts you when you’ve entered it someplace other than accounts.google.com. This does two things: it prevents you from re-using your Google password on other sites, and it protects you if you’ve entered your password on a site that’s pretending to be Google to collect your private information, a practice also known as phishing.

Excited about Google’s new map ads? You should be!

As an avid Google Maps user on both a personal and business level, I’ve often wished for a more interactive and all-inclusive experience. How My Email Account Got Hacked and the Steps I Took

Platforms Are Making You Vulnerable

It’s been over a week since Facebook announced that, thanks to a coding vulnerability, access tokens for at least 50 million* accounts were stolen. Access tokens are important. As Facebook explained in its blog detailing the hack, they are “the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app.”

The hack also impacted Facebook’s Single Sign-On, which lets people use one account to log into other sites, meaning the impact of the breach is perhaps wider than even Facebook initially reported. Still, at the moment, there’s no way to know how big of a problem it is, or will be. Nor do we know who did it. We’re in the dark for one simple reason: Facebook has said next to nothing about what it knows — or if it knows much at all.  Ad-driven platforms tend to succeed thanks to one thing: our vulnerability.

How Amazon and Microsoft will battle Google over Android

Amazon and Microsoft are the two companies best suited to go face to face with Google in terms of app ecosystem and native application offerings for Android.  Four or five years ago, this would have been inconceivable. Neither company was in a position to provide compelling applications or store experiences that rivaled what Google had.  But that has changed.

No, that “Google Business Manager” isn’t actually Google Calling

Taken verbatim from Google’s own Safety Center “Google does not make unsolicited sales calls from an automated system. However, we may place automated phone calls to your business, as a service to Google users, for non-sales tasks like making reservations or confirming your business hours. These calls are only enabled for businesses that offer public phone numbers for the purpose of receiving calls from the general public, and use the automated voice-calling service Duplex.”

That doesn’t stop anyone from taking a screenshot of your message, however.
